The Primitivo Way, starting in Oviedo, was the first historical pilgrimage route to Santiago, established in the 9th century by King Alfonso II the Chaste to visit the newly discovered tomb of Apostle James.

Salvador Route Variant

Oviedo is also the final stage of the Camino del Salvador, linking León with Oviedo (122 km) through the Cantabrian Mountains. Many pilgrims combine both routes: "Those who go to Santiago and not to the Savior, visit the servant but not the Lord."

Physical preparation

The Primitivo Way is demanding, with mountain stages. Prior training is recommended, especially for the initial Asturian stages.

Recommended gear

Light backpack (max. 10kg), broken-in footwear, technical clothing, rain jacket, and documents. Specialized stores are available in Oviedo.

Best time

From May to October, avoiding July and August due to heat. Spring offers great landscapes but higher chance of rain.
